Winter is the time to just stockpile your kitchen wastes in a pile outside and let them freeze. There is a trick, though, to prevent the garbage from melting into a congealed and smelly mass in the spring. Each and every time you make garbage deposit, simply toss some hay, straw, or leaves on top. You’ll love the aerated and absorbent effect after spring thaw. This makes your stockpile pre-layered and easier to work up into a formal working heap.

Got a worm bin?
Freeze that food waste for 3 days at 100F before feeding it to your worms. You’ll prevent fruit fly and gnat hatchings.
