Tips for Spring Soil Preparation in South Central Alaska
Wisdom from Bob Greig*, Founder of Alaska Sea-Ag
MINIMIZE SOIL DISTURBANCE Rototill as little as possible. Better yet, switch to using a Broad Fork to gently loosen soil and work your compost and fertilizers into your beds.
LIME: Use high-calcium lime, rather than dolomite lime (unless your soil test recommends otherwise) You have to ask specifically for it in the stores. Then check bag labels yourself to make sure.
FERTILIZERS: See the other postings in this section for more information that leads to healthy soil and healthy plants.
TRANSPLANTING: As you transplant, apply the FISH THE FLATS/FISH THE CROPS mixture. You’ll minimize shock and increasing vigor, plus stimulate your soil microbiome for strong, nutient-dense crops. Or try soaking your seedlings in this mixture just before transplanting outdoors.
SOLUBLE KELP (or Seaweed) POWDER called Maxicrop: An excellent source of trace elements & potassium or K. Spray this kelp to ward off damping off of seedlings, reduce transplant shock, and resist fungal and bacterial diseases in the greenhouse.
These products f make a positive difference in crop health & vigor.
*Shucks, you may have guessed it. Greigs have been my local heroes, dedicating their lives to providing products for crop, soil, and human health. I miss you, Bob!
